Easter Eggs in England?

Chris asked me Fri. night why I got two boxes of brown eggs (note they are 10 to a container instead of a dozen) and I said "What, are you an egg racist?" And then he said "No, I just think dyeing and decorating them won't show up as well." Ha, that didn't even occur to me. Oops! All they had were brown eggs! Then we went to the store again on Saturday afternoon and we found a six pack of naturally blue eggs but no white eggs.

And after getting strange responses and noticing that I didn't see dye kits at any of the stores, I concluded that it may not be the tradition here to dye eggs? Sure enough, some friends confirmed that they don't dye or decorate and hide real eggs here. Apparently the tradition is to get a big chocolate egg and to perhaps hide chocolate eggs. But everyone agreed that eating hot cross buns toasted and buttered on Easter was a must. Several friends posted alternate ideas for dye kits which sounded really cool and we will have to try some other time:

Naturally-Dyed Easter Eggs

Per cup of water use:

1 cup chopped purple cabbage — makes blue on white eggs, green on brown eggs
1 cup red onion skins — makes lavender or red eggs
1 cup yellow onion skins — makes orange on white eggs, rusty red on brown eggs
1 cup shredded beets — makes pink on white eggs, maroon on brown eggs
2 tablespoons ground turmeric — makes yellow eggs
1 bag Red Zinger tea — makes lavender eggs
→ Add 1 tablespoon white vinegar to every cup of strained dye liquid

→ For every dozen eggs, plan on using at least 4 cups of dye liquid

And come to find out-brown eggs dye up very nicely as well-apparently they turn out more jewel toned. Good to know!

We ended up just using stickers and crayons (that we already had) to decorate them with the kids which worked out well. This one that Ethan did that looks like a typewriter gone wild was my fave:

Haha, look at Chris intently coloring (he gets a little competitive and wants to create the "best one"):

Oh and check out these chip flavors-I am so fascinated by some of the random chip flavors you find in other countries:
