Ferry to Cherbourg, Bayeux Tapestry, Battle of Normandy War Museum, Omaha Beach

We took the 4hr. Barfleur Brittany Ferry from Poole (it departed just across the bridge from our townhouse) over to Cherbourg, France. Luckily, we left our garage at 7:40am, right on schedule. It was predicted to rain but turned out to be a gorgeous sunny ride over. Taking the ferry was a nice way to travel. The seats had more leg room than an airplane and the kids could move around (and run around on the top deck). Except for Hailey puking... However, we caught it in time and got it all in the barf bag so we considered that a victory. Poor girl really does get motion-sick. After that we decided that feeding her while on the boat was not a good idea.

Hailey, the little flirt:

Once we arrived in Cherbourg, we drove to Bayeux in the pouring rain. First we went to check out the Bayeux Tapestry (hundreds of years old cartoony linen tapestry with wool embroidery, depicting the history behind and the Battle of Hastings). Next was the Battle of Normandy Museum. It was a very informative overview and gave a detailed history of all of the events, strategies etc.

Here was a cathedral in Bayeux:

Kinda looks like God struck down this statue. :)

Next we headed to the place we stayed, La Spaniere, which was right off of Omaha Beach (very nice place, had a great restaurant onsite, a loft that the kids slept in, and a little back deck). Here we are at Omaha Beach:

The minion coloring book comes everywhere, that is non-negotiable:

Proud to be an American:

There are American (and English, Canadian and French) flags at different memorials all along the beach. Omaha beach (along with Utah beach) was one of the American beaches so there were a lot of American flags. Seeing all of the places in person where so many American lives were lost made it much more real.

Here we are at the restaurant. Hailey is eating the olives in style:

Chris got this cold salmon (pretty much sushi raw style):

Ethan ate the olives, prosciutto and bread but not much of the greens:

Oh and they served our red house wine cold, which was interesting...
